The Psychology of Cold DMs

Understanding why people respond (or don't) is the first step to better messaging:

People respond when they feel:

  • The message is actually for them (not copy-pasted)
  • There's clear value in responding
  • The ask is easy and non-threatening
  • The sender seems credible and genuine
  • People ignore when:

  • The message is obviously automated
  • It's all about the sender, not them
  • The ask is too big or unclear
  • It feels like spam
  • The Perfect Opening Line

Your first line determines whether they read the rest. Great openers:

    Reference something specific:

"Saw your post about [specific topic] - really resonated with me"

"Just watched your story about [specific thing] - had to reach out"

    Ask a genuine question:

    "Quick question about [their work/business]..."

"Noticed you're doing [thing] - how's that going?"

    Compliment authentically:

"Your [specific content] has been super helpful for my [use case]"

Avoid generic openers like "Hey!" or "Love your page!"

    Value-First Messaging

Lead with what's in it for them, not what you want:

Bad: "I help businesses with marketing. Want to hop on a call?"

Good: "I noticed you're spending a lot on ads - I found a way to cut that by 40% while getting better results. Mind if I share how?"

Key difference: The good version offers specific value before asking for anything.

    DM Templates That Work

    Template 1: The Observation

"Hey [Name]! Just saw your [specific post/story] about [topic]. [Your take on it]. Quick question - are you currently [their potential pain point]? If so, I might have something useful for you."

    Template 2: The Mutual Connection

"Hey [Name]! Noticed we both [common ground - same industry, follow same people, etc]. I'm working on [relevant thing] and thought you'd be a great person to connect with. What's your take on [relevant question]?"

    Template 3: The Value Bomb

"Hey [Name] - noticed you're [doing specific thing]. I put together a [free resource] that helped [similar person] achieve [specific result]. Want me to send it over? No catch, just thought it might help."

    Template 4: The Question

"Hey [Name]! Quick one - if you could [achieve specific outcome they want] without [common obstacle], would that be interesting to you?"

    Personalization Techniques

Levels of personalization (more is better):

Level 1 - Name: Use their first name (minimum)

Level 2 - Industry: Reference their business type

Level 3 - Content: Mention specific posts or content they've shared

Level 4 - Situation: Reference their current business situation

Level 5 - Deep Research: Mention interviews, podcasts, or detailed insights

Even Level 2-3 personalization dramatically increases response rates.

    Call-to-Action Formulas

Your CTA should be easy to say yes to:

    Low commitment CTAs (highest response):

  • "Mind if I share more?"
  • "Would that be helpful?"
  • "Interested?"
  • "Worth exploring?"
  • Medium commitment CTAs:

  • "Free to chat for 10 mins this week?"
  • "Can I send you a quick video explanation?"
  • Avoid high commitment CTAs in first message:

  • "Let's hop on a 30-minute call"
  • "Check out my website and book a demo"
  • What NOT to Do

Common mistakes that kill response rates:

    - Long paragraphs (keep it scannable)

    - All caps or excessive exclamation marks!!!

    - Asking for too much too soon

    - Being overly salesy or pushy

    - Generic copy-paste messages

    - Multiple CTAs in one message

    - Talking about yourself more than them

    - Using fake urgency ("Only 3 spots left!")

    Message Length Guidelines

    Optimal message length by platform:

Instagram: 100-300 characters (shorter is better)

X (Twitter): 100-250 characters (very short wins)

General rule: If you can say it in fewer words, do it.

Mobile preview shows ~100 characters - make those count!
